Ronson Mastercase Cigarette Lighter Case Combination

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
My most recent articles were about some fountain pens that i found had an interesting history. Additions Antiques specializes in a variety of interesting antiques and collectibles. This time I’m going to change things up a bit and go into some vintage cigarette lighter/ tobacciana collectibles.
In In a more elegant time when smoking was considered glamorous. a few companies dedicating their entire output to high quality cigarette lighters and accessories. The first and one of the most interesting companies was Art Metal Works, producing Ronson cigarette lighters cases and accessories in Newark, New Jersey USA. I don’t even smoke but I love these gadgets and their histories. The items I find most interesting are their cigarette lighter case combinations. Ronson was a pioneer in the development of the first practical cigarette lighters and produced one of the first cigarette lighter case combinations, the Ronson Mastercase. The Mastercase was introduced in 1933 and was produced for over 20 years in more then 100 different designs. A few examples are shown at RONSON MASTERCASE For a brief history RONSON. Find a more complete history at Vintage Ronson

My name is Gary, I have been collecting Vintage cigarette lighters for over 30 years. Antique Vintage Fountain Pen Eversharp Skyline Introduced 1941

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Last week I poster an article on the Eversharp Symphony model fountain pen designed by Raymond Loewy, introduced in 1948. This was the last Eversharp  model designed by a celebrated industrial designer. In the post I mentioned The Eversharp Skyline Pen Designed By Henry Dreyfuss. The Skyline was the first Eversharp Pen Styled by a famed designer.

The Eversharp Skyline Fountain pen, Introduced in 1941, was the first of several Eversharp designs by famed industrial designers. This pen was styled by Henry Dreyfuss A leading industrial designer of the 1930s and 1940s. A previous Dreyfuss designs, the streamlined steam locomotive Twentieth Century Limited. shows a definite resemblance to the Skyline pen.The design is typical of the Art Deco era.

Henry Dreyfuss, a native of Brooklyn New York, was a celebrated industrial designer through the 1930s and 1940s. Dreyfuss applied a common sense approach to design problems. Specializing in the design of consumer products Dreyfuss dramatically improved the look, feel, and usability of dozens of items. Dreyfuss designs include Western Electric 302 model telephone 1930, Hoover Model 150 Vacuum Cleaner 1936, Westclox Big Ben Alarm Clock 1939, New YorkCentral Railroads Streamlined Mercury Train 1936, The Twentieth Century Limited Locomotive 1938, John Deere Tractors 1938, The Wahl Eversharp Skyline Pen 1940, Royal Typewriters 1940s, Bell System Telephones 1949 – 1965, Several American Steamships 1951, The Honeywell Circular Wall Thermostat 1953, Hoover vacuum cleaners 1954 – 57 and The Polaroid SX-70 Land camera 1972.

I now have one example of an Eversharp Skyline fountain pen at FOUNTAIN PENS and a brief history at Skyline Fountain Pen.

Some good information is available on Wikipedia at HENRY DREYFUSS Additional Biography and history is available at Henry Dreyfuss Design

ANTIQUE Fountain Pen Eversharp Symphony 1948-52

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I recently acquired 2 examples of The Eversharp Symphony model fountain pens. I found these interesting for a few reasons. First I have been collecting Vintage fountain pens for over 30 years and I had never heard of this model. Upon further research I found the history of these pens fascinating. It seems that in the 1940s Eversharp had been loosing business to larger manufacturers like Shaeffer Watterman and Parker. In an effort to increase sales Eversharp introduced several fountain pen models designed by famous industrial designers. The first the Skyline, introduced in 1941 and produced in great numbers, had been designed by Henry Dreyfuss.
Introduced in 1948, the Symphony was one of the first pens aggressively marketed as styled by a famed designer – in this case, Raymond Loewy (1893-1986). Eversharp was a pioneer in hiring well-known industrial designers. Raymond Loewy was born in Paris France and was the first industrial designer to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine. He spent most of his professional career in the United States. Among his designs were the Shell and former BP logos, the Greyhound Scenicruiser bus, Coca-Cola vending machines, the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 and S-1 locomotives, the Lucky Strike package, Coldspot refrigerators, the Studebaker Avanti and Champion, and the Air Force One livery. His career spanned seven decades.

Sadly these fountain pen designs did not have the positive impact on sales that Eversharp had hoped for and the Symphony was the last high quality line produced by the company. In 1957 Eversharp was aquired by the Parker Pen Co. and an economy line of pens was produced under the the Eversharp name. Funny but when researching the Symphony and Skyline pen models today there is hardly a mention of the famous designers who created them.

I have several examples of these pens on my site at FOUNTAIN PENS and a brief history at Symphony Fountain Pen
For more information on Raymond Leowy Wikipedia has some good information at Raymond Loewy and another good site dedicated to Raymond Loewy Design also has some great information.
